Elders, designated by their tribal governments to participate in Bering Sea Elders Group, sign a resolution requesting executive action from the White House to protect the northern Bering Sea, and strengthen the role of tribes in future decisions affecting the region.

On December 9, 20216, in response to Bering Sea Elders Group and our participating tribes, the Association of Village Council Presidents, and Kawerak, Inc., President Obama signed an executive order creating the 112,300 square mile Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience Area. The executive order provides a pathway for Alaska tribes to exercise our self-determination and a greater role in decision-making over the northern Bering Sea and Bering Strait region. This is the first time a President has required that indigenous knowledge and expertise be applied to federal management decisions, answering a decades-long drum beat of Native peoples.

We are grateful to President Obama for listening to our people!
